The New Zealand Medical Association welcomes the increased funding for District Health Boards (DHBs) over the next 4 years, announced in today’s Budget. “This will enable more vital elective surgery, improve support services, and fund new projects such as the Healthy Families NZ campaign,” says NZMA Chair Dr Mark Peterson.

The extension of free GP visits and prescriptions to under-13 year olds will also be a welcome boost for families. “This does improve the situation for children, but targeting services to those that need them most is an area that needs even more attention if we are to improve equity in terms of health outcomes.”

Dr Peterson said the funding to roll out eight more children’s teams to work with at-risk children and their families was a welcome move.
