We are the largest medical organisation in New Zealand, and our members come from all disciplines within the medical profession, and include specialists, general practitioners, doctors-in-training and medical students.
The NZMA provides leadership of the medical profession, and promotes:
- professional unity and values
- the health of New Zealanders
The key roles of the NZMA are:
- to provide advocacy on behalf of doctors and their patients
- to provide support and services to members and their practices
- to publish and maintain the Code of Ethics for the profession
- to publish the New Zealand Medical Journal
The NZMA is a strong advocate on medico-political issues, with a strategic programme of advocacy with politicians and officials at the highest levels.
As well as being a membership-based organisation, the NZMA also acts as an "umbrella" for many other medical and health organisations, and provides regular forums which consider pan-professional issues and policies.
The NZMA has a close relationship with, and provides support to, the NZ Medical Students Association (NZMSA).
The NZMA carries out administrative, advocacy and communcations activities for the New Zealand Branch of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO).
